Fix-It Friday: Windows & Screens — Fix Them Before the Bugs Find Them

Spring in New Mexico is right around the corner, and that means warmer days, open windows… and eventually bugs looking for a way inside.

Last week we talked about tightening up some of the small things winter loosens around the house. This week’s Fix-It Friday is about another simple check that can save you headaches later: your windows and screens.

The good news? Most window and screen issues are quick fixes that take just a few minutes.

Let’s take a look at what to check before bug season officially arrives.

🪟

Check Your Window Screens

Even a small tear can turn into an open door for mosquitoes and flies.

Take a quick walk around your home and look for:

  • Small tears or holes in the screen

  • Screens pulling loose from the frame

  • Bent or damaged frames

Quick fix:
Small holes can often be repaired with a simple screen repair kit. If the screen is badly torn or brittle, it may be time to re-screen the frame, which is easier than most people expect. We can even do it for you!

🪟

Clean Out Window Tracks

Dirt, dust, and winter debris can build up in window tracks and make them hard to open.

A quick cleaning can make a huge difference.

What to do:

  1. Vacuum out loose debris

  2. Wipe the track with a damp cloth

  3. Use a small brush or old toothbrush for stubborn dirt

Once clean, a light lubricant can help windows slide smoothly again.

🌬

Look for Drafts

Even though winter is ending, drafts around windows can still affect comfort and energy use.

Check for:

  • Cracked caulking

  • Worn weatherstripping

  • Small gaps where the frame meets the wall

These are easy fixes that can improve comfort year-round.

🧰

Don’t Forget the Screen Door

Screen doors take a beating all year long.

Check:

  • Hinges

  • Door closers

  • Torn mesh

  • Latch alignment

A few minutes of adjustment now can keep the door closing properly all spring and summer.

🛠

Final Thought

Most homeowners don’t think about windows and screens until the first mosquito finds its way inside.

Taking a few minutes now to check screens, clean tracks, and seal small gaps can save a lot of frustration later.

And if you need screen repair kits, weatherstripping, help figuring out what you’re looking at, or want your screens rescreened by us, stop by Rio Rancho Hardware. We’re always happy to help you get it fixed the right way.

See you next Friday for another Fix-It Friday.
