Spring Home Walk-Through: 5 Things to Check Before the Season Changes

Winter has a way of quietly loosening, drying out, and wearing down parts of your home. Before spring projects ramp up, this Fix-It Friday is all about aquick walk-through that can save you time, money, and headaches later.

You don’t need a contractor — just a few minutes, a screwdriver, and a little know-how.

✅ 1. Doors & Hinges

Cold weather can shift doors just enough to cause squeaks or sticking.

  • Tighten loose hinge screws

  • Add a drop of lubricant to noisy hinges

  • Check exterior doors for gaps or drafts

Pro tip:If a screw won’t tighten, a toothpick and wood glue can give it new bite.

✅ 2. Windows & Screens

Now’s the time to catch cracked seals or damaged screens.

  • Look for drafts or rattling panes

  • Repair small screen tears before bugs find them

  • Clean tracks so windows slide smoothly

✅ 3. Faucets & Hose Bibs

Freezing temps can cause slow leaks you might not notice right away.

  • Check under sinks for moisture

  • Turn on outdoor spigots and look for drips

  • Replace worn washers before they turn into bigger problems

✅ 4. Smoke & CO Detectors

Spring is a great reminder to stay safe.

  • Test all alarms

  • Replace batteries if you haven’t since fall

  • Make sure nothing is blocking sensors

✅5. Tools & Supplies Check

Before weekend projects start piling up:

  • Toss dried-out caulk and glue

  • Make sure you have fresh batteries

  • Take inventory so you’re not running out mid-project

🛠️ Final Thought

A simple walk-through now can prevent bigger fixes later — and most of these checks take less than 30 minutes.

If you’re not sure what to grab or want a second opinion, stop by Rio Rancho Hardware. We’re always happy to help you fix the little things before they become big ones.
